Ankylosing spondylitis is a kind of arthritis that affects the joints and ligaments of the spine. 'Ankylosing' means stiff and 'spondylo' means vertebra. Ankylosing spondylitis can affect other large joints, and can be related to problems in the eyes, skin, bowel and heart.
